Instra Corporation Becomes An Accredited ENUM Registrar

Melbourne, May 17th 2005

Last week, Instra Corporation, the leading international Domain Registrar, was accredited by AusRegistry to provide ENUM registration services. ENUM, or Electronic Number Mapping, will be key to the operation of the Internet Telephone service.

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) chose AusRegistry International Pty Ltd to run the Australian trial of ENUM, linking data registry services for consumers who have registered their phone numbers.

ENUM provides a bridge between traditional phone networks and the Internet. Communications providers, businesses and consumers will find that ENUM makes Internet-based communications services accessible via a single number. This ENUM is converted to Internet addresses allowing end users to use their ENUM as a single point of contact for Voice over IP (VoIP), email and instant and voice messaging.

ACA Acting Chairman Allan Horsley said "The Australian trial is expected to run for a minimum of one year, and will be open to anybody interested in testing applications or services with ENUM". .ENUM trials have begun in Europe and Asia and a full commercial ENUM service was launched in Austria in late 2004." He continued "This new solution allows callers to contact people via Internet-based services using their exiting phone numbers."

Speaking for Instra Corporation, Tony Lentino added "We are very excited about this development. It's the next step for the convergence of Telephone and Internet services. Consumers will be able to use a single number for their telephone, fax, e-mail and messaging."

Intra Corporation is ideally placed to work with AusRegistry and other players in the Voip industry to prepare for ENUM. The company operates a global Internet domain name registrar, and is working closely with its European partners VoipGate S.A. to expand its Internet telephony operations to the Asia Pacific region. VoipGate S.A., based in Luxembourg, provides Internet Voice services in Europe.

ENUM also compliments Instra's PhNUM project, where users can easily obtain and manage geographic phone numbers, using a combination of Voip, ENUM and PSTN convergence technologies.

Companies and individuals will be able to register their ENUM domains for the Australian trial with Instra from June 8th, the official launch date for the Australian ENUM trial.

For further information, visit the Instra Corporation's ENUM website www.enumregistry.com, or contact Gene Wahrlich [email protected].
